Arran Distillery were amongst the first of the new wave of modern Scottish distilleries. It was built at a time when confidence was just returning to the industry in 1993. Arran Distillers was founded by Harold Currie, former director of Chivas and a D-Day veteran, with the intention of building a distillery on Arran. Its first spirit flowed in 1995. The style of whisky made is surprisingly soft for an Island whisky, with a malty, smooth and lightly peated character. More warehousing has been added recently and they use a large range of cask types, but mainly ex-bourbon and ex-sherry. All their whiskies are un-coloured and un-chilfiltered.
Their second distillery opened in the south of the island last year at Lagg, where they make a very unique style of peated single malt.
