Dalwhinnie
Dalwhinnie, Scotland has a population of 80 and is home to the Dalwhinnie Distillery, famous for being the “highest” distillery in Scotland. The distillery sits at 1164 feet above sea level, nestled at the western base of the Cairngorms Mountains.
Dalwhinnie was founded in 1897, by John Grant, but production didn't start until the next year in 1898.
The name Dalwhinnie, from the Scots Gaelic "Dail-coinneeamh," which translates roughly into "meeting place," and it refers to the joining of ancient routes cattle herdsmen would use, to drive their stock to market.
The distillery offers a range of different products, with its signature single malt being the 15 year-old although the distillery also produces a 20 year-old and a 36 year-old, among other Distillers Editions. Only a small percentage of the single malt distilled at Dalwhinnie, around 10 percent, is marketed as single malt, with the majority being used in the Diageo-owned Buchanan and Black & White blends.
