A complex blend of 70 botanicals are used to create this unique liqueur from the town of Benevento near Naples. The recipe was first formulated by Guiseppe Alberti in 1860 but it was his sons who were the first to market it in any meaningful way.
The herbs and spices used come from Europe, the Orient and South America. The significant ingredients include Cinnamon from Sri Lanka, Juniper from the Italian Apennines, Wild Mint from the river banks of Benevento, Cloves, Star Anise and Saffron (which gives the vivid yellow colour. The botanicals are macerated before being distilled in swan necked pot stills. A brief ageing is carried out before the finished product is bottled.
