A company that can trace its origins back to 1849 when a French confectioner named Adolphe Cointreau started to produce some liqueurs in his hometown of Angers. In 1885 Edouard Cointreau (Adolph's nephew) created the famous orange liqueur for which the company is now famous. Since then the liqueur has continued to become more famous and was given a massive boost when the Cosmopolitan cocktail was created in 1988. The company has since merged with Remy Martin to form Remy-Cointreau but there is still some family involvement in the form of brand ambassador Alfred Cointreau.
