While we all know our popular Irish whiskeys, there are many other Irish Whiskeys to try for the Irish (and Irish-at-heart). So be sure to try some of these fine tipples at home this St Patrick’s day and get into the spirit—Erin go Bragh!
From the Writer's Tears Whiskey team comes Writers Tears Double Oak. Using a combination of American Oak casks from Kentucky and French Oak Cognac casks from Allary Cooperage in France this is an elegantly balanced blend of Irish Single Malt and Single Pot Still Whiskey.
Knappogue Castle 12 Year Old is a replacement for the original 40% edition. This was the first whiskey released by Knappogue Castle with an age statement and is a triple distilled single malt whiskey which has been aged in Bourbon casks for a period of 12 years. Balanced, focused, and integrated, slightly astringent and nicely fruity. Midpalate has delicate tastes of marshmallow, brown sugar, oaky vanilla, and marzipan.
The hugely popular Renaissance Series from Teeling is back with their third release! Aged for a total of 18 years with a final finishing period in Muscat wine casks. Series 3 offers a different style to the previous releases with a fresh tropical fruit spectrum with mango, pineapple, and citrus to the fore and even a touch of mint and pear drops. A lively and more-ish single malt that is best served straight in a good nosing glass where the vibrant aromas can be savoured. Limited to just 9000 bottles and bottled at 46%.
This exclusive release features an elegant blend of single malt and single grain whiskey without the gift box which has been matured in part in ex-bourbon casks before a finishing period in XO Cognac French Limousin oak casks. Limited to under 6000 bottles worldwide, this unique release commemorates the passing their co-founder 100 years on from his death. Elegantly complex and balanced with lighter notes of vanilla sweetness from the grain whiskey with further layers of flavour from the XO oak casks.
From Tullamore Dew comes a 14 Year Old Single Malt which has been triple distilled and aged with patience in ex-Bourbon barrels for a period of 14 years, after which it has been finished in 4 different cask types; ex-Oloroso Sherry Butts, ex-Port Pipes and ex-Madeira Drums. This finishing period lasts a total of 6 months adds a layer of depth and complexity to this fine dram.
Dunvilles PX Cask 12 Year Old is a well-rounded, expressive whiskey which is similar in flavour profile to Dunvilles 10 Year Old with the addition of finishing in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. Sweet and lightly spicy with notes of bubblegum, custard, and green apples.
A celebratory release, this marks the anniversary year of the 1916 Easter Rising, one of the momentous events in modern Irish history. Matured exclusively in bourbon casks, this features the typical smooth, vanilla, and popcorn flavours you would expect from a single grain whiskey.
