Malet Roquefort

In 1705, founder Louis de Malet, Lord of Roquefort, married Isabeau Bonneau de Fonrocque, the daughter of Helie Bonneau, squire and owner of the La Gaffelière and Fonrocque estates. Their marriage marked the arrival of the Malets in Saint-Emilion.

In 1910, the first Louis-Alexandre undertook to modernise La Gaffelière. He replanted the vineyard along more scientific lines, a project that took some twenty years to complete. He also adopted these rootstocks, which have since propagated and are the only estate to use.

His son Léo took over from him in 1958. He threw himself enthusiastically into the running of the estate and built up the reputation of La Gaffelière. He continued with the modernisation programme, introducing estate bottling for the 1962 vintage, green harvesting in 1985 and a new concrete wine cellar in 1990.

Alexandre, having trained in South America, set up his own wine merchants business in 1995. In 2011, he joined his father in 2001 and embarked on expanding the estates, bringing them together under a single brand: Domaines Comte de Malet Roquefort.

In 2016 the Chateau was purchased by Domaine Comte de Malet Roquefort. Production remains in its own cellar and is done by the wine making team of Chateau La Gaffeliere. This superb value for money Saint Emilion Grand Cru should be enjoyed now. ..
