House of Metaxa

Born in 1848 in Greece, Spyros Metaxa was a descendant of a family of silk merchants. Metaxa was considered to be an adventurer and man of taste, one who was always travelling and searching for different spirits and wines around the world, until one day, he decided to establish his own business in fine goods.

It was in Samos where the House of Metaxa began. Samos is a Greek island of lush vegetation and vineyards that have been world-famous since the times of the Ancient Greek traders. The warm sun, tough mineral soil, and rainfall at the right times of the year make the conditions ideal for the Muscat grapes to grow, rich in taste, plentiful in aromas.

Constantinos Raptis, the house's Metaxa Master, first makes his selection of the Muscat wines from Samos, chosen for their aromatic concentration and intensity. He then chooses the fine wine distillates for their character and elegance.

The Muscat wines and wine distillates are aged separately in oak casks until Raptis decides they are ready to be married. A bouquet of Mediterranean botanicals brings the final touch.
