The Whiskey Sour, a classic cocktail with a rich history and a timeless appeal, has earned its place among the ranks of iconic mixed drinks. With its balanced combination of sweet and sour, the Whiskey Sour has become a symbol of sophistication and leisure.

Historical Roots and Evolution:

The origins of the Whiskey Sour can be traced back to the early days of cocktails, when simple recipes involving spirits, sugar, and citrus were created. The exact origin of the cocktail is difficult to pinpoint, but it is widely believed to have emerged in the 18th century as a result of sailors mixing spirits with citrus to prevent scurvy. As time went on, the cocktail evolved from basic provisions to a more refined and complex drink, gaining popularity in bars and social gatherings.

Ingredients and Flavour Profile:

The classic Whiskey Sour is composed of just a few key ingredients: whiskey, lemon juice, sugar, and often an egg white or aquafaba. The whiskey provides the base spirit, imparting depth, and complexity to the cocktail. Fresh lemon juice contributes the sour element, balancing the sweetness of the sugar and providing a refreshing tartness. The sugar rounds out the flavours, while the egg white, when used, adds a velvety texture and a frothy head, creating a visually appealing presentation.

The Whiskey Sour's journey from the basic mix of spirits and citrus to a sophisticated and revered cocktail reflects the evolution of mixology itself. Its balance of flavours, combined with its historical roots and cultural significance, has allowed the Whiskey Sour to remain a beloved and enduring classic in the world of cocktails. Whether sipped in a refined lounge or crafted at the home bar, the Whiskey Sour stands as a testament to the timeless appeal of well-balanced flavours and the artistry of mixing drinks.

So, how do you make this cocktail?

Ingredients:

50ml Teeling Small Batch or Buffalo Trace

25ml Mixer lemon juice

15ml Monin Sugarcane syrup

Optional: Fee Brothers Fee Foam Cocktail Foamer

Ice

Lemon twist or cherry, for garnish

Equipment: Copper 8 Piece Cocktail Kit, Fine mesh strainer

Method:

Step 1) Chill your Glass. In the cocktail shaker, add the whiskey, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup. If you're using an egg white or aquafaba, add it to the shaker as well.

Step 2) If you're using an egg white, seal the shaker and shake it vigorously without ice. This process, known as a "dry shake," helps emulsify the egg white and create a frothy texture.

Step 3) Open the shaker and fill it with ice. Seal the shaker again and shake vigorously for about 10-15 seconds. This chills and dilutes the cocktail while blending the flavours.

Step 4) Using the strainer, pour the cocktail into a chilled rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish your Whiskey Sour with a twist of lemon peel or a cherry. Twist the lemon peel over the cocktail to release its oils before dropping it in.
