If you like Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain, then this is the blog post for you! (Well, maybe not the latter part!)

The pina colada is a sweet, tropical delight with a rich history. The exact origins of the Pina Colada are shrouded in mystery, with multiple claims and stories surrounding its creation. One popular account credits a Puerto Rican pirate named Roberto Cofresí with inventing the Pina Colada in the 19th century. Cofresí, known for his acts of piracy and his affinity for fine living, is said to have mixed rum, pineapple juice, and coconut milk to boost the spirits of his crew. This refreshing concoction not only lifted their morale but also became a symbol of the Caribbean's vibrant culture.

It was not until the 1950s and '60s, when tiki bars and exotic cocktails were becoming increasingly popular, that the Pina Colada gained international acclaim. The vibrant blend of tropical flavours and the aesthetic appeal of the cocktail made it a favourite among tourists visiting Caribbean resorts.

In 1954, a bartender named Ramón "Monchito" Marrero created a signature Pina Colada recipe at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Using local ingredients such as rum, coconut cream, and fresh pineapple, Marrero perfected the Pina Colada, giving it the smooth and creamy texture we know today. The drink became an instant hit, attracting visitors from all over the world to the hotel's Beachcomber Bar. In 1978, recognizing its cultural significance, the Puerto Rican government declared the Pina Colada the official national drink of Puerto Rico.

Whether sipped by the beach or enjoyed at home, the Pina Colada's refreshing combination of pineapple, coconut, and rum continues to transport us to sunny shores, providing a tiny taste of the tropics in every sip.
